Excessive hair growth is more common than we think. Frequently Asked Questions

How does light assisted hair removal work?

Light is selectively absorbed by melanin, the pigment in the hair follicle. The light energy heats the pigment and effectively destroys the hair follicle without damaging the surrounding cells.

How is treatment carried out?

The laser i placed on the skin and a short pulse of light is released, which targets many follicles simultaneously. The applicator is then moved to the neighboring area and the process is repeated until the entire area is treated. For IPL a thin layer of gel is applied to guide the light.

Am I suitable for treatment?

Most people are suitable for treatment. Best results are often achieved with clients who have fair skin and dark hair. Dark hair is more easily treated as it has a higher concentration of melanin. Fair hair, however, contains less melanin so is harder to treat. Grey / White hair has no melanin so cannot be treated with IPL (however we can treat grey hairs at the clinic with electrolysis).

How does treatment feel?

Treatment sensation varies but is often described as a 'flick of an elastic band'. Typically no anesthesia is required and most clients describe the discomfort as tolerable.

What will I see after treatment?

The hair follicles are damaged by the heat but the hairs remain in the follicles. The dead hairs shed after 1-3 weeks as the epidermis renews. During this period the hairs will appear to grow as they are pushed out by the new epidermis.

Are there any side effects?

The skin may be red immediately after treatment and the hair follicles may be swollen and bumpy but this usually subsides after a few hours. Adverse reactions are rare but may include a small blister or temporary lightening of the skin.

How many treatments are necessary?

Only hair actively growing is affected therefore multiple treatments are needed. Treatment is carried out every 4-8 weeks, until a satisfactory result can be seen. The number for treatments varies but typically 6 or more is needed for optimum results.

How long does each treatment take?

Treatments can take as little as 10 minutes depending on the size of the area.

Consultation procedure

Prior to treatment a consultation is conducted in which a medical history questionnaire is taken to confirm suitability for treatment. There is also an opportunity for any questions you may have to be answered. Before treatment commences you must provide written consent and a small patch test will be carried out.

Laser IPL Photo-Rejuvenation

...with the award winning Lumina IPL Laser from the U.K's No.1 Laser & IPL Manufacturer.

This is a gentle intense pulse light laser to stimulate collagen production and will therefore improve the firmness and overall texture of the skin long term. Collagen and elastin fibres provide support and structure to the skin.

With our age collagen starts to diminish causing fine lines and wrinkles. Photo-Rejuvenaion activates the fibroblaststo produce more collagen and elastin, leaving your skin firmer, smoothe and fresher looking.

As the course of treatment progresses the collagen cells are continually activated and the collagen comes to the surface and helps reduce lines and wrinkles.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Intense Pulsed Light Work?

Intense Pulsed Light systems release precisely controlled short pulses of light that stimulate fiberblast cells within the skin that produce collagen and elastin. In addition, specific lesions such as thread veins, age spots and freckles can be targeted resulting in a more uniform complexion. The skin becomes firmer, appears more radiant and enlarged pores are reduced. Nd:YAG Laser may be selected to target deeper lines and promote further collagen production.

How is the treatment carried out?

The skin is thoroughly cleansed, and a mild relaxing skin peel or microdermabration is often performed before the IPL treatment to maximise the results. Exfoliating the skin to remove the top layers of dead skin leaves the skin feeling smooth and soft. A thin layer of chilled gel is applied to the area to guide the light into the skin. The light applicator is placed on to the skin and a short pulse of light is released. The handpiece is then moved to the neighboring area until the entire area is treated. The chilled gel is removed and the area cooled. During treatment protective eyewear is provided.

Am I suitable for treatment?

Treatment is suitable for most people except very dark skinned or tanned individuals. However large, dark, mottled or raised pigmentation cannot be treated and may need to be checked by a dermatologist. Large, dark moles should not be treated, nor should lesions covering a large part of the body. The pigmented marks that respond best are superficial lesions such as those caused by sun damage (sun spots) or freckles.

How does the treatment feel?

Most patients describe the discomfort as mild and tolerable and no anesthesia is required.

Are there any side effects?

The skin may be quite red and slightly swollen after treatment but this usually subsides quickly. Very rarely a small blister may form and there can be temporary lightening of the skin. However, most people feel no side effects and any skin reaction disappears within a few hours.

What should I expect after the treatment?

Redness and a slight warming sensation are normal after treatment. A cooling pack is applied after treatment to calm the skin. You may see darkening of any pigmented spots before they flake off leading to a more even skin tone. Tightening of the skin should increase over the following months as new collegen is produced within the dermis.

How many treatments are necessary?

Skin Rejuvenation - treatments are carried out every 2-3 weeks and 6 treatments are recommended for best results. Thereafter top up treatments are performed as required but typically once or twice a year.

Pigmentation / Thread Veins - The number of treatments will depend on the type and size of the lesion but typically 1 - 3 sessions are required at 4 - 6 week intervals.

Consultation procedure?

Prior to treatment, a consultation is conducted in which a medical history is taken to confirm suitability for treatment. There is also an opportunity for any questions you may have to be answered. Before treatment commences you must provide written consent and a small test patch will be carried out.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Lasers Work?

IPL release short pulses of filtered light that is readily absorbed by the high concentration of melanin found within sun spots, freckles or liver spots. The rapid absorption of light energy heats the melanin and causes the destruction of melanin rich cells.

How is IPL treatment carried out?

A layer of gel is applied to the treatment area. The light applicator is placed on the skin and a short pulse of light is released. The applicator is then moved to the neighboring area and the process is repeated until the entire area is treated. The chilled gel is removed and the area cooled. During treatment protective eyeware will be provided.

Am I suitable for treatment?

Most people are suitable for treatment except for very dark skinned or tanned individuals. However, large, dark, mottled or raised pigmentation cannot be treated and may need to be checked by a dermatologist. Large dark moles should not be treated nor lesions covering a large part of the body. The pigmented marks that respond best are superficial lesions such as those caused by sun damage or freckles.

How does the treatment feel?

Most patients describe the discomfort as mild and no anesthesia is required.

What should I expect after treatment?

The treated area may feel warm and sensitive for the first few days post treatment. With IPL the lesions may appear darker and more obvious before they fade and 'flake' away. With laser treatment an initial whitening of the area is seen and quickly fades and the pigment gradually fades over the following weeks.

Are there any side effects?

The skin that surrounds the pigmentation may become red initially after treatment. Most people experience no further side effects and the redness usually disappears within a few hours to a few days. very rarely a small blister may form or the skin may become temporarily lighter or darker.

How long does each treatment take?

The length of the treatment will depend on the type and size of the pigmented lesion but a typical session will take between 10 and 30 minutes.

How many treatments are necessary?

The number of treatments will depend on the size and type of the pigmented lesion but typically 3 sessions are required at 4-6 week intervals.

Consultation Procedure

Prior to treatment you must first undergo a consultation where details about your medical history are obtained in order to confirm suitability. Before proceeding you will be asked to sign a consent form and undergo a test patch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Fractional Laser Treatment?

'Fractional' Laser Treatment is a treatment that treats minute sections of the skin, which penetrate into the dermis to stimulate significant collagen renewal. The surrounding non-affected areas of the skin aid the body’s natural recovery process for dramatic results without significant recovery time. As the new collagen filled cells replace the old tissue the skin has an even tone, becomes plumper, smoother and less lined.

What does treatment feel like?

A warm, heating sensation, similar to sunburn. The skin is generally cooled by either an inbuilt or stand-alone cooling system which will cool the skin first, ensuring treatment is more comfortable.

What should I expect after treatment?

Your skin may appear red and flushed for a few hours after treatment. However, our laser systems treat the tiniest section of skin in comparison to other skin resurfacing lasers. Therefore, any redness or swelling is very minimal. As the old skin tissue sheds your skin may appear more bronzed or tanned for a few days post treatment. Your skin will naturally exfoliate and may flake as if you have mild sunburn.

How many treatments will I need?

We often advise a series of three to six treatments for optimal results. If acne scarring is your primary concern you may require additional sessions. Treatment is carried out every two to six weeks but your laser clinician will advise the optimal frequency during your consultation.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are rare but could include a small blister. Any blistering is superficial and would heal within a week or two.
